Letting Go - Orginal Art

Mixed Medium

36" x 36"

In moments of heightened experience—whether it's the dizzying altitude of a first tandem skydive or the quiet, intense focus of creating art—I often find myself grappling with the dissonance between what I expect to feel and what arises.

I sat on the edge of the plane, squatting, my legs cramping, eyes fixed on the patchwork earth below, and I wondered: How am I supposed to feel? Scared? Excited? A rush of wonderment?

I felt the wind sweep across my face, a sharp chill that matched the uncertainty in my chest. But I didn’t feel the fear I anticipated. I didn’t hear the countdown. Time itself seemed suspended—or perhaps erased altogether—as I hovered between two worlds. In that moment, I became acutely aware of everything: my body, the wind, the vast sky—yet, paradoxically, I felt disconnected from the usual narratives of fear or exhilaration.

This moment mirrors my artistic process. There are times when the expectations around creation fall away, and the raw, unfiltered sensation of being in the process takes over. The unexpected becomes the most powerful element: the cramp in my leg that forces me to focus, the wind that shifts my sense of space, the way the world below seemed both infinitely distant and immediately close. These moments of discomfort, uncertainty, and stillness open new perspectives, challenging how we perceive the familiar.

In my work, I explore the tension between the known and the unknown, the planned and the spontaneous. I’m drawn to the moments where art—like life—does not deliver what we expect, but instead pushes us toward something more complex, more visceral, and ultimately more human. It is in the moments before we let go, when we are suspended in anticipation, that the deepest revelations emerge. Just as the act of skydiving releases us into a new reality, so too does the act of creation release us from the constraints of expectation, allowing us to confront the unknown.
